Comets strike back to Division 2
Last weekend saw the Comets playing in the Championship 2 playoffs at Leeds. With games against English Roses, Birmingham and Hucknall it was going to be tough for the Comets but confidence was high after getting through the first part of phase 2 without losing.
The first game was against the English Roses and was a bruising affair. Their last encounter had resulted in a draw and the Roses had obviously decided to make the match more physical in an effort to stop the Comets. The Comets did well but with half time approaching were 2-5 down and needing a goal. However, with 7 seconds to go Lucy Thomas scored and gave the Comets a possible way back into the match. In the third quarter the Comets really took control of the game and with goals from Annie & Maisy Clapperton together with some great defending saw the Comets briefly take the lead before going into the final quarter 6-6. This last quarter was a tense affair with some great chances at either end but finally the deadlock was broken by the English Roses who scored 2 goals without reply to make the final result 6-8 (2-1-3-0 vs 2-3-1-2).
With the Comets losing their first match it was vital that they win their next game verses Birmingham. This was going to be an interesting test of how far the team has come as the last time they met Birmingham had won 9-8. The girls got off to a flying start taking the first quarter 4-1 and by half time they were leading 7-2 and clearly in control. Taking the gas off in the third quarter allowed Birmingham to start to come back and when they scored at the start of the fourth to make the score 6-9 you did wonder if this would cause the Comets to wobble but they showed no signs at all to score 3 goals without reply effectively sealing the win. With the final score 7-12 (1-1-3-2 vs 4-3-2-3) this gave the Comets the much needed win and also showed how much the team has progressed over the past year.
Birmingham having already lost their other games by the time the Comets faced Hucknall promotion back to division 2 was already guaranteed. In the first quarter Hucknall made a strong start going 2 goals up within the first minute with the Comets struggling to get going. The match was a case of missed opportunities for both teams with shots constantly hitting the woodwork and with the Hucknall keeper also being in outstanding form goals were in short supply for the Comets. However they started to claw back in the fourth but ran out of time with the final score 6-4 (2-2-2-0 vs 0-1-1-2).
This made Hucknall the Championship 2 champions but more importantly meant the Comets had achieved their main goal of the weekend by coming in the top 3 to give themselves a place in Division 2 next season.
A big thanks must go to George and Sarah for their time and effort over the season but most of all a big thank you to all the players. It has been great fun watching the games and the team has put in some great performances (notably for me the season highlight with the win over Tyldesley) . With continued effort and training I can only see us getting better and stronger.
